Usually, an inspection of the job site is needed prior to providing a quote for your project. However, you can call us and we will help you get a rough estimate for your exposed aggregate project. You will be able to see a firm quote once the site inspection has been done.
Here we have one type of exposed aggregate mix however the second photo has an Indian ink oxide base (which is added to the mix at the time of batching from the plant). The first photo has the regular plain concrete base but as you can see by adding the darker base it really pops the colours. This is a more decorative finish but does come with a higher price tag.

Driveway Replacement and Upgrade Process (Exposed Aggregate Finish)
This project involved the complete replacement and upgrade of an existing steep concrete driveway and carport area. The work was completed in several key stages to achieve a durable and visually appealing exposed aggregate finish that complements the home’s modern look.
1. Site Assessment and Preparation
The first step was a detailed assessment of the old driveway (Photo 1). The existing single-width plain concrete driveway showed signs of wear, cracking, and limited space for vehicle access. We measured gradients, checked drainage flow, and marked the new, wider layout. All existing concrete was cut into manageable sections and removed using a concrete saw and excavator, ensuring a clean base for the new pour.
2. Excavation and Formwork
We excavated the area to the required depth, allowing for the new slab thickness and subbase material. A layer of compacted road base was installed to provide a stable foundation. Formwork was then set up to define the new, wider driveway shape, including the carport area. The retaining wall on the left side was rebuilt using concrete blocks to create additional width and stability before being rendered and painted.
3. Reinforcement and Pouring
Reinforcing steel mesh was placed throughout the driveway area (Photo 2) to increase strength and prevent cracking. Bar chairs were used to ensure correct placement within the slab. With all preparations complete, the concrete pump delivered a 32 MPa exposed aggregate mix. Our crew levelled and screeded the surface, working efficiently due to the steep slope and warm Brisbane conditions.
4. Exposure and Finishing
Once the concrete had set sufficiently, the surface layer of cement paste was carefully washed off to reveal the natural stones within the mix — the hallmark of an exposed aggregate finish. Control joints were saw-cut to manage shrinkage movement.
5. Final Touches
The retaining wall was rendered and painted to match the house façade, and the edges were neatly finished for a professional look (Photo 3). The result is a modern, slip-resistant, and long-lasting driveway that enhances the property’s value and street appeal.

Can exposed aggregate concrete be placed over concrete?
It is possible to add exposed aggregate directly over concrete. However, it will be a great idea to discuss this with us first as you choose your mix.
How much maintenance does my exposed agregate concrete need?Unlike other building materials, it is a durable material that requires minimal maintenance.
Do I need to have my concrete sealed?
Sealing can be done to protect impurities penetrating the surface. It can extend the life of the concrete and reduce pitting. If an acrylic sealer is used, the concrete should be sealed every one to three years, depending on the traffic and the weather conditions.
How durable is an exposed aggregate concrete?
Since it is constructed from concrete, exposed aggregate is strong enough to withstand years of foot traffic, vehicle movement, and extreme weather conditions.
What is the process done to create an exposed aggregate?
To create the exposed aggregate, we spray a chemical surface retarder to the slab surface to delay the setting of the material. This is to allow flexibility, so the cement paste can be removed by pressure washing or scrubbing. The process is done immediately after placing and finishing.
Will pressure washing be beneficial?
If you’re using a high-pressure cleaner on your driveway, you need to choose carefully. If the pressure is too high, the cement may be damaged, and the stones from your driveway may loosen.
